Nhö vaày toâi nghe.
Moät thôøi Theá Toân truù ôû Savatthi, Jetavana, taïi tinh xaù oâng Anathapindika (Caáp coâ ñoäc).
Luùc baáy giôø con moät cuûa moät gia chuû, khaû aùi, ñaùng thöông, bò meänh chung. Sau khi noù cheát, (ngöôøi cha) khoâng coøn muoán laøm vieäc, khoâng coøn muoán aên uoáng, luoân luoân ñi ñeán nghóa ñòa, ngöôøi aáy than khoùc: "Con ôû ñaâu, ñöùa con moät cuûa ta? Con ôû ñaâu, ñöùa con moät cuûa ta?" Roài ngöôøi gia chuû aáy, ñi ñeán Theá Toân, sau khi ñeán, ñaûnh leã Theá Toân roài ngoài xuoáng moät beân. Theá Toân noùi vôùi ngöôøi gia chuû ñang ngoài moät beân:
-- Naøy Gia chuû, coù phaûi OÂng coù caùc caên ñeå an truù töï taâm oâng, coù phaûi caùc caên cuûa OÂng ñoåi khaùc?
-- Baïch Theá Toân, sao caùc caên cuûa con coù theå ñoåi khaùc ñöôïc? Baïch Theá Toân, ñöùa con moät khaû aùi, ñaùng thöông cuûa con ñaõ meänh chung. Sau khi noù cheát (con) khoâng coøn muoán laøm vieäc, con khoâng coøn muoán aên uoáng, con luoân luoân ñi ñeán nghóa ñòa vaø than khoùc: "Con ôû ñaâu, ñöùa con moät cuûa ta? Con ôû ñaâu, ñöùa con moät cuûa ta?"
-- Söï thaät laø nhö vaäy, naøy Gia chuû, vì raèng, naøy Gia chuû, saàu, bi, khoå, öu naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi.
-- Nhöng ñoái vôùi ai, baïch Theá Toân, söï tình seõ nhö vaäy: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi?" Vì raèng, baïch Theá Toân hyû laïc (anandasomanassa) do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi.
Roài ngöôøi gia chuû, khoâng hoan hyû lôøi Theá Toân daïy, choáng baùng laïi, töø choã ngoài ñöùng daäy vaø ra ñi.
Luùc baáy giôø, moät soá ngöôøi ñaùnh baïc ñang chôi ñoå nhöùt luïc khoâng xa Theá Toân bao nhieâu. Ngöôøi gia chuû kia, ñi ñeán nhöõng ngöôøi ñaùnh baïc aáy, sau khi ñeán noùi vôùi nhöõng ngöôøi aáy nhö sau:
-- Naøy Quyù vò, ôû ñaây toâi ñi ñeán Sa-moân Gotama, sau khi ñeán, ñaûnh leã Sa-moân Gotama roài ngoài xuoáng moät beân. Naøy Quyù vò, Sa-moân Gotama noùi vôùi toâi ñang ngoài moät beân:
-- "Naøy Gia chuû, coù phaûi OÂng coù caùc caên ñeå an truù töï taâm oâng. Coù phaûi caùc caên cuûa OÂng ñoåi khaùc?" Naøy Quyù vò, ñöôïc nghe noùi vaäy toâi noùi vôùi Sa-moân Gotama:
-- "Baïch Theá Toân sao caùc caên cuûa con coù theå ñoåi khaùc ñöôïc. Baïch Theá Toân, ñöùa con moät khaû aùi, ñaùng thöông cuûa con ñaõ meänh chung. Sau khi noù cheát, con khoâng coøn muoán laøm vieäc, con khoâng coøn muoán aên uoáng, con luoân luoân ñi ñeán nghóa ñòa vaø than khoùc: "Con ôû ñaâu, ñöùa con moät cuûa ta? Con ôû ñaâu, ñöùa con moät cuûa ta?"
-- "Söï thaät laø nhö vaäy, naøy Gia chuû. Vì raèng, naøy Gia chuû, saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo, do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi".
-- "Nhöng ñoái vôùi ai, baïch Theá Toân, söï tình seõ nhö vaäy! "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Vì raèng baïch Theá Toân, hyû laïc do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Naøy Quyù vò, khoâng hoan hyû lôøi Theá Toân daïy, ta choáng baùng laïi, töø choã ngoài ñöùng daäy vaø ra ñi.
-- Söï thaät laø nhö vaäy, naøy Gia Chuû! Söï thaät laø nhö vaäy naøy Gia chuû! Naøy Gia chuû, hyû laïc do aùi sanh, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi.
Roài ngöôøi gia chuû suy nghó: "Coù söï ñoàng yù giöõa ta vaø nhöõng ngöôøi ñaùnh baïc", roài boû ñi.
Vaø cuoäc ñoái thoaïi aáy daàn daàn ñöôïc truyeàn ñi vaø truyeàn ñeán trong noäi cung. Roài vua Pasenadi xöù Kosala cho goïi hoaøng haäu Mallika:
-- Naøy Mallika, ñaây laø lôøi Sa-moân Gotama noùi vôùi caùc ngöôøi aáy: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi".
-- Taâu Ñaïi vöông, neáu Theá Toân ñaõ daïy nhö vaäy, thì söï vieäc laø nhö vaäy.
-- Ñieàu gì Sa-moân Gotama noùi, Mallika naøy cuõng noùi theo. Vì Mallika quaù hoan hyû vôùi Sa-moân Gotama. Vì vò Ñaïo sö noùi gì cho ñeä töû, vaø ñeä töû quaù hoan hyû vôùi vò Ñaïo sö neân noùi: "Söï thaät laø vaäy, thöa Ñaïo sö! Söï thaät laø nhö vaäy, thöa Ñaïo sö". Cuõng vaäy, naøy Mallika, ñieàu gì Sa-moân Gotama noùi, Hoaøng haäu quaù hoan hyû vôùi Sa-moân Gotama neân ñaõ noùi: "Neáu Theá Toân ñaõ noùi nhö vaäy thôøi söï vieäc laø vaäy". Haõy ñi ñi, Mallika, haõy ñi ñi!
Roài hoaøng haäu Mallika cho goïi Baø-la-moân Nalijangha vaø noùi:
-- Naøy Baø-la-moân, haõy ñi ñeán Theá Toân, sau khi ñeán, nhaân danh ta cuùi ñaàu ñaûnh leã chaân Theá Toân, hoûi coù ít beänh, ít naõo, khinh an, khí löïc sung maõn, laïc truù, vaø thöa: "Baïch Theá Toân, hoaøng haäu Mallika cuùi ñaàu ñaûnh leã chaân Theá Toân, hoûi thaêm Theá Toân coù ít beänh, ít naõo, khinh an, khí löïc sung maõn laïc truù khoâng, vaø thöa nhö sau: "Baïch Theá Toân, coù phaûi Theá Toân ñaõ noùi nhö sau: Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Vaø neáu Theá Toân traû lôøi OÂng nhö theá naøo, haõy kheùo naém giöõ vaø noùi laïi vôùi ta. Vì caùc Nhö Lai khoâng noùi phaûn laïi söï thaät.
-- Thöa vaâng, taâu Hoaøng haäu.
Baø-la-moân Nalijangha vaâng ñaùp hoaøng haäu Mallika, ñi ñeán Theá Toân, sau khi ñeán noùi leân nhöõng lôøi chaøo ñoùn hoûi thaêm vôùi Theá Toân, Vaø sau khi noùi leân nhöõng lôøi chaøo ñoùn hoûi thaêm thaân höõu lieàn ngoài xuoáng moät beân. Ngoài xuoáng moät beân, Baø-la-moân Nalijangha Baïch Theá Toân:
-- Thöa Toân giaû Gotama, hoaøng haäu Mallika cuùi ñaàu ñaûnh leã chaân Sa-moân Gotama, hoûi thaêm coù ít beänh, ít naõo, khinh an, khí löïc sung maõn, laïc truù vaø thöa nhö sau: "Baïch Theá Toân, coù phaûi Theá Toân ñaõ noùi nhö sau: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi"?
-- Thaät söï laø nhö vaäy, naøy Baø-la-moân. Thaät söï laø nhö vaäy, naøy Baø-la-moân. Naøy Baø-la-moân, saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi.
Naøy Baø-la-moân, ñaây laø moät phaùp moân, do phaùp moân naøy, caàn phaûi ñöôïc hieåu laø saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi. Naøy Baø-la-moân, thuôû xöa, ôû taïi Savatthi naøy, baø meï cuûa moät ngöôøi ñaøn baø meänh chung. Töø khi baø ta meänh chung, ngöôøi ñaøn baø naøy phaùt ñieân cuoàng, taâm tö hoãn loaïn, ñi töø ñöôøng naøy qua ñöôøng khaùc, töø ngaõ tö ñöôøng naøy qua ngaõ tö ñöôøng khaùc vaø noùi: "Ngöôøi coù thaáy meï toâi ñaâu khoâng? Ngöôøi coù thaáy meï toâi ñaâu khoâng?"
Naøy Baø-la-moân, ñaây laø moät phaùp moân, do phaùp moân naøy, caàn phaûi ñöôïc hieåu laø saàu, bi, khoå, öu naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi. Naøy Baø-la-moân, thuôû xöa, ôû taïi Savatthi naøy, ngöôøi cha cuûa moät ngöôøi ñaøn baø meänh chung..., ngöôøi anh meänh chung..., ngöôøi chò meänh chung..., ngöôøi con trai meänh chung..., ngöôøi con gaùi meänh chung..., ngöôøi choàng meänh chung. Töø khi ngöôøi choàng meänh chung, ngöôøi ñaøn baø naøy phaùt ñieân cuoàng, taâm tö hoãn loaïn, ñi töø ñöôøng naøy qua ñöôøng khaùc, ñi töø ngaõ tö ñöôøng naøy qua ngaõ tö ñöôøng khaùc vaø noùi: "Ngöôøi coù thaáy choàng toâi ñaâu khoâng? Ngöôøi coù thaáy choàng toâi ñaâu khoâng?"
Naøy Baø-la-moân, ñaây laø moät phaùp moân, do phaùp moân naøy caàn phaûi ñöôïc hieåu laø saàu, bi, khoå, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi. Naøy Baø-la-moân, thuôû xöa, ôû taïi Savatthi naøy, ngöôøi meï cuûa moät ngöôøi ñaøn oâng meänh chung. Töø khi baø ta meänh chung, ngöôøi ñaøn oâng naøy phaùt ñieân cuoàng, taâm tö hoãn loaïn, ñi töø ñöôøng naøy qua ñöôøng khaùc, ñi töø ngaõ tö ñöôøng naøy qua ngaõ tö ñöôøng khaùc vaø noùi: "Ngöôøi coù thaáy meï toâi ñaâu khoâng? Ngöôøi coù thaáy meï toâi ñaâu khoâng?"
Naøy Baø-la-moân, ñaây laø moät phaùp moân, do phaùp moân naøy caàn phaûi ñöôïc hieåu laø saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi. Naøy Baø-la-moân, thuôû xöa, ôû taïi Savatthi naøy, ngöôøi cha cuûa moät ngöôøi ñaøn oâng meänh chung..., ngöôøi anh meänh chung..., ngöôøi chò meänh chung..., ngöôøi con trai meänh chung..., ngöôøi con gaùi meänh chung..., ngöôøi vôï meänh chung. Töø khi ngöôøi vôï meänh chung, ngöôøi ñaøn oâng naøy phaùt ñieân cuoàng, taâm tö hoãn loaïn, ñi töø ñöôøng naøy qua ñöôøng khaùc, ñi töø ngaõ tö ñöôøng naøy qua ngaõ tö ñöôøng khaùc, vaø noùi: "Ngöôøi coù thaáy vôï toâi ñaâu khoâng? Ngöôøi coù thaáy vôï toâi ñaâu khoâng?"
Naøy Baø-la-moân, ñaây laø moät phaùp moân, do phaùp moân naøy caàn phaûi ñöôïc hieåu laø saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi. Naøy Baø-la-moân, thuôû xöa chính taïi thaønh Savatthi naøy, moät ngöôøi ñaøn baø ñi veà thaêm gia ñình baø con. Nhöõng ngöôøi baø con aáy cuûa ngöôøi ñaøn baø muoán duøng söùc maïnh baét ngöôøi ñaøn baø aáy phaûi xa choàng vaø muoán gaû cho moät ngöôøi ñaøn oâng khaùc. Ngöôøi ñaøn baø aáy khoâng chòu. Roài ngöôøi ñaøn baø aáy noùi vôùi choàng mình: "Naøy Hieàn phu, nhöõng ngöôøi baø con naøy muoán duøng söùc maïnh baét toâi phaûi xa anh vaø muoán gaû cho moät ngöôøi ñaøn oâng khaùc. Nhöng toâi khoâng muoán nhö vaäy". Roài ngöôøi aáy chaët ngöôøi ñaøn baø aáy laøm hai, roài töï vaän, nghó raèng: "Hai chuùng ta seõ gaëp nhau trong ñôøi sau". Naøy Baø-la-moân, do phaùp moân naøy caàn phaûi ñöôïc hieåu raèng saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi.
Roài Baø-la-moân Nalijangha hoan hyû tín thoï lôøi Theá Toân daïy, töø choã ngoài ñöùng daäy, ñi ñeán hoaøng haäu Mallika, sau khi ñeán, keå laïi cho hoaøng haäu Mallika toaøn theå cuoäc ñaøm thoaïi vôùi Theá Toân.
Roài hoaøng haäu Mallika ñi ñeán vua Pasenadi nöôùc Kosala, vaø thöa:
-- Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Ñaïi vöông coù thöông coâng chuùa Vajiri cuûa thieáp khoâng?
-- Phaûi, naøy Mallika, ta thöông coâng chuùa Vajiri.
-- Taâu ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho coâng chuùa Vajiri cuûa Ñaïi vöông. Ñaïi vöông coù khôûi leân saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, neáu coù söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho coâng chuùa Vajiri cuûa ta, thì seõ coù moät söï thay ñoåi ñeán ñôøi soáng cuûa ta, laøm sao khoâng khôûi leân nôi ta, saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo?
-- Chính lieân heä ñeán söï tình naøy, taâu Ñaïi vöông maø Theá Toân, baäc Tri Giaû, Kieán Giaû, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc ñaõ noùi: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Nöõ Saùt-ñeá-lò Vasabha, Ñaïi vöông coù thöông yeâu khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, ta coù thöông yeâu nöõ Saùt-ñeá-lò Vasabha.
-- Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho nöõ Saùt-ñeá-lò Vasabha, Ñaïi vöông coù khôûi leân saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho nöõ Saùt-ñeá-lò Vasabha, thì seõ coù moät söï ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho ñôøi soáng cuûa ta, laøm sao khoâng khôûi leân nôi ta saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo?
-- Chính lieân heä ñeán söï tình naøy, taâu Ñaïi vöông, maø Theá Toân, baäc Tri Giaû, Kieán Giaû, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc ñaõ noùi: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khôûi leân do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Töôùng quaân Vidudabha, Ñaïi vöông coù thöông quyù khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, ta coù thöông quyù töôùng quaân Vidudabha.
-- Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho töôùng quaân Vidudabha, Ñaïi vöông coù khôûi leân saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho töôùng quaân Vidudabha thì seõ coù söï ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho maïng soáng cuûa ta, laøm sao khoâng khôûi leân nôi ta, saàu, bi, khoå, öu naõo?
-- Chính lieân heä ñeán söï tình naøy, taâu Ñaïi vöông, maø Theá Toân, baäc Tri Giaû, Kieán Giaû, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc ñaõ noùi: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khôûi leân do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Ñaïi vöông coù yeâu thöông thieáp khoâng?
-- Phaûi, naøy Mallika, ta coù thöông yeâu Hoaøng haäu.
-- Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho thieáp, Ñaïi vöông coù khôûi leân saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho Hoaøng haäu, thì seõ coù moät söï ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho maïng soáng cuûa ta, laøm sao khoâng khôûi leân nôi ta saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo?
-- Chính lieân heä ñeán söï tình naøy, taâu Ñaïi vöông, maø Theá Toân, baäc Tri Giaû, Kieán Giaû, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc ñaõ noùi: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khôûi leân do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi". Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Ñaïi vöông coù yeâu thöông daân chuùng Kasi vaø Kosala khoâng?
-- Phaûi, naøy Mallika, ta thöông yeâu daân chuùng Kasi vaø Kosala. Naøy Mallika, nhôø söùc maïnh cuûa hoï, chuùng ta môùi coù ñöôïc goã chieân-ñaøn töø nöôùc Kasi vaø duøng caùc voøng hoa, höông lieäu, phaán saùp.
-- Taâu Ñaïi vöông, Ñaïi vöông nghó theá naøo? Neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch, ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho daân chuùng Kasi vaø Kosala, Ñaïi vöông coù khôûi leân saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khoâng?
-- Naøy Mallika, neáu coù moät söï bieán dòch ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho daân chuùng nöôùc Kasi vaø Kosala, thì seõ coù moät söï ñoåi khaùc xaûy ñeán cho maïng soáng cuûa ta, laøm sao khoâng khôûi leân nôi ta saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo?
-- Chính lieân heä ñeán söï tình naøy, taâu Ñaïi vöông, maø Theá Toân, baäc Tri Giaû, Kieán Giaû, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc ñaõ noùi: "Saàu, bi, khoå, öu, naõo khôûi leân do aùi sanh ra, hieän höõu töø nôi aùi".
-- Thaät vi dieäu thay, naøy Mallika! Thaät hy höõu thay, naøy Mallika! Theá Toân ñaõ theå nhaäp nhôø trí tueä, ñaõ thaáy nhôø trí tueä. Ñeán ñaây, Mallika, haõy söûa soaïn taåy traàn.
Roài vua Pasenadi nöôùc Kosala töø choã ngoài ñöùng daäy ñaép thöôïng y vaøo moät beân vai, chaép tay vaùi Theá Toân vaø noùi leân ba laàn lôøi caûm höùng sau ñaây: "Ñaûnh leã Theá Toân, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc! Ñaûnh leã Theá Toân, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc! Ñaûnh leã Theá Toân, baäc A-la-haùn, Chaùnh Ñaúng Giaùc! ".

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi at Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Now at that time a certain householder's dear and beloved little son, his only child, had died. Because of his death, the father had no desire to work or to eat. He kept going to the cemetery and crying out, "Where have you gone, my only little child? Where have you gone, my only little child?"
Then he went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there the Blessed One said to him, "Householder, your faculties are not those of one who is steady in his own mind. There is an aberration in your faculties."
"Lord, how could there not be an aberration in my faculties? My dear and beloved little son, my only child, has died. Because of his death, I have no desire to work or to eat. I keep going to the cemetery and crying out, 'Where have you gone, my only little child? Where have you gone, my only little child?'"
"That's the way it is, householder. That's the way it is -- for sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear."
"But lord, who would ever think that sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear? Happiness and joy are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear." So the householder, not delighting in the Blessed One's words, rejecting the Blessed One's words, got up from his seat and left.
Now at that time a large number of gamblers were playing dice not far from the Blessed One. So the householder went to them and, on arrival, said to them, "Just now, venerable sirs, I went to Gotama the contemplative and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As I was sitting there, Gotama the contemplative said to me, 'Householder, your faculties are not those of one who is steady in his own mind. There is an aberration in your faculties.'
"When this was said, I said to him, 'Lord, how could there not be an aberration in my faculties? My dear and beloved little son, my only child, has died. Because of his death, I have no desire to work or to eat. I keep going to the cemetery and crying out, "Where have you gone, my only little child? Where have you gone, my only little child?"'
"'That's the way it is, householder. That's the way it is -- for sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.'
"'But, lord, who would ever think that sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear? Happiness and joy are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.' So, not delighting in the words of Gotama the contemplative, rejecting them, I got up from my seat and left."
"That's the way it is, householder [said the gamblers]. That's the way it is. Happiness and joy are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear."
So the householder left, thinking, "I agree with the gamblers."
Eventually, word of this conversation made its way into the king's inner chambers. Then King Pasenadi Kosala addressed Queen Mallika, "Mallika, your contemplative, Gotama, has said this: 'Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.'"
"If that was said by the Blessed One, great king, then that's the way it is."
"No matter what Gotama the contemplative says, Mallika endorses it: 'If that was said by the Blessed One, great king, then that's the way it is.' Just as, no matter what his teacher says, a pupil endorses it: 'That's the way it is, teacher. That's the way is.' In the same way, no matter what Gotama the contemplative says, Mallika endorses it: 'If that was said by the Blessed One, great king, then that's the way it is.' Go away, Mallika! Out of my sight!"
Then Queen Mallika called for the brahmin Nalijangha: "Come, brahmin. Go to the Blessed One and, on arrival, showing reverence with your head to his feet in my name, ask whether he is free from illness and affliction, is carefree, strong, and living in comfort, saying: 'Queen Mallika, lord, shows reverence with her head to your feet and asks whether you are free from illness and affliction, are carefree, strong, and living in comfort.' And then say: 'Lord, did the Blessed One say that sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear?' Whatever the Blessed One says, remember it well and tell it to me. For Tathagatas do not speak what is untrue."
"Yes, madam," the brahmin Nalijangha responded to Queen Mallika. Going to the Blessed One, on arrival he exchanged courteous greetings with the Blessed One. After an exchange of friendly greetings and courtesies, he sat to one side. As he was sitting there he said to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, Queen Mallika shows reverence with her head to your feet and asks whether you are free from illness and affliction, are carefree, strong, and living in comfort. And she says further: 'Lord, did the Blessed One say that sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear?'"
"That's the way it is, brahmin. That's the way it is. Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear. And it's through this sequence of events that it may be understood how sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.
"Once in this same Savatthi there was a woman whose mother died. Owing to her mother's death she went mad, out of her mind, and wandering from street to street, crossroads to crossroads, would say, 'Have you seen my mother? Have you seen my mother?' It's through this sequence of events that it may be understood how sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.
"Once in this same Savatthi there was a woman whose father died...whose brother died...whose sister died...whose son died...whose daughter died...whose husband died. Owing to his death she went mad, out of her mind, and wandering from street to street, crossroads to crossroads, would say, 'Have you seen my husband? Have you seen my husband?' It's through this sequence of events that it may be understood how sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.
"Once in this same Savatthi there was a man whose mother died. "Once in this same Savatthi there was a wife who went to her relatives' home. Her relatives, having separated her from her husband, wanted to give her to another against her will. So she said to her husband, 'These relatives of mine, having separated us, want to give me to another against my will,' whereupon he cut her in two and slashed himself open, thinking, 'Dead we will be together.' It's through this sequence of events that it may be understood how sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear."
Then the brahmin Nalijangha, delighting in and approving of the Blessed One's words, got up from his seat and went to Queen Mallika. On arrival, he told her all that had been said in his conversation with the Blessed One.
Then Queen Mallika went to King Pasenadi Kosala and on arrival said to him, "What do you think, great king: Is Princess Vajiri dear to you?"
"Yes, Mallika, Princess Vajiri is dear to me."
"And what do you think: would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair arise in you from any change and aberration in Princess Vajiri?"
"Mallika, any change and aberration in Princess Vajiri would mean an aberration of my very life. How could sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair not arise in me?"
"Great king, it was in connection with this that the Blessed One -- the One who knows, the One who sees, worthy, and rightly self-awakened -- said, 'Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.'
"Now what do you think, great king: Is the noble Queen Vasabha dear to you?...Is [your son] General Vidudabha dear to you?...Am I dear to you?"
"Yes, Mallika, you are dear to me."
"And what do you think: would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair arise in you from any change and aberration in me?"
"Mallika, any change and aberration in you would mean an aberration of my very life. How could sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair not arise in me?"
"Great king, it was in connection with this that the Blessed One -- the One who knows, the One who sees, worthy, and rightly self-awakened -- said, 'Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.'
"Now what do you think, great king: Are [your subjects] the Kasis and Kosalans dear to you?"
"Yes, Mallika, the Kasis and Kosalans are dear to me. It is through the might of the Kasis and Kosalans that we use Kasi sandalwood and wear garlands, scents, and ointments."
"And what do you think: would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair arise in you from any change and aberration in the Kasis and Kosalans?"
"Mallika, any change and aberration in the Kasis and Kosalans would mean an aberration of my very life. How could sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair not arise in me?"
"Great king, it was in connection with this that the Blessed One -- the One who knows, the One who sees, worthy, and rightly self-awakened -- said, 'Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair are born from one who is dear, come springing from one who is dear.'"
"It's amazing, Mallika. It's astounding: how deeply the Blessed One sees, having pierced through, as it were, with discernment. Come Mallika: Give me the ablution water." Then King Pasenadi Kosala, rising from his seat and arranging his upper robe over one shoulder, payed homage in the direction of the Blessed One with his hands palm-to-palm in front of his heart, and exclaimed three times:
