Long is the night
to the wakeful;
long is the league to the weary;
long is Sa'msaara to the foolish
who know not the Sublime Truth. -- 60 |
60. Maát nguû thaáy ñeâm
daøi,
Meät nhoaøi thaáy ñöôøng xa,
Keû ngu luaân hoài maõi,
Chaùnh phaùp bieát ñaâu laø!

Ekacariya.m da.lha.m kayiraa natthi
baale sahaayataa. -- 61
|
If, as the disciple
fares along,
he meets no companion who is better or
equal,
let him firmly pursue his solitary career.
There is no fellowship with the foolish.

61. Neáu tìm khoâng gaëp
baïn,
Hôn mình hay ngang mình,
Thaø quyeát soáng moät mình,
Chôù thaân caän keû ngu.

Puttaa matthi dhanammatthi iti
baalo viha~n~nati
Attaa hi attano natthi kuto puttaa
kuto dhana.m. -- 62
|
"Sons have I; wealth
have I":
Thus is the fool worried.
Verily, he himself is not his own.
Whence sons? Whence wealth? -- 62 |
62. Con ta, taøi saûn ta,
Keû ngu maõi lo xa,
Chính ta coøn khoâng coù,
Taøi saûn, con ñaâu ra?

Yo baalo ma~n~nati baalya.m pa.n.dito
vaa-pi tena so
Baalo ca pa.n.ditamaanii sa ve baalo-ti
vuccati. -- 63
|
The fool who knows
that he is a fool
is for that very reason a wise man;
the fool who thinks that he is wise
is called a fool indeed. -- 63 |
63. Ngöôøi ngu bieát mình
ngu,
Nhôø vaäy thaønh coù trí,
Ngöôøi ngu cho mình trí,
Thaät ñaùng goïi chí ngu!

Na so dhamma.m vijaanaati dabbii suuparasa.m

|
Though a fool,
through all his life,
associates with a wise man,
he no more understands the Dhamma
than a spoon (tastes) the flavour of soup.

64. Keû ngu daàu troïn
ñôøi,
Thaân caän vôùi ngöôøi trí,
Cuõng khoâng hieåu phaùp vò,
Nhö muoãng trong noài canh.

Khippa.m dhamma.m vijaanaati jivhaa
suuparasa.m yathaa. -- 65
|
Though an intelligent
person,
associates with a wise man for only a
moment,
he quickly understands the Dhamma
as the tongue (tastes) the flavour of
soup. -- 65 |
65. Ngöôøi trí vôùi ngöôøi
trí,
Gaàn nhau trong phuùt giaây,
Chaùnh phaùp nhaän ra ngay,
Nhö löôõi neám canh vaäy.

Caranti baalaa dummedhaa amitten-eva

Karontaa paapaka.m kamma.m ya.m hoti
ka.tukapphala.m. -- 66
|
Fools of little
wit move about
with the very self as their own foe,
doing evil deeds
the fruit of which is bitter. -- 66 |
66. Keû ngu si thieáu trí,
Töï ngaõ hoùa ra thuø,
AÙc nghieäp taïo laàn hoài,
Phaûi chòu quaû cay ñaéng.

Na ta.m kamma.m kata.m saadhu ya.m
katvaa anutappati
Yassa assumukho roda.m vipaaka.m pa.tisevati.

That deed is not
well done when,
after having done it, one repents,
and when weeping, with tearful face,
one reaps the fruit thereof. -- 67 |
67. Ngöôøi taïo nghieäp
baát thieän,
Laøm xong sanh aên naên,
Maét ñaãm leä than raèng,
Phaûi chòu quaû cay ñaéng.

katvaa naanutappati
Yassa patiito sumano vipaaka.m pa.tisevati.

|
That deed is well
done when,
after having done it, one repents not,
and when, with joy and pleasure,
one reaps the fruit thereof. -- 68 |
68. Ngöôøi taïo ñöôïc
thieän nghieäp,
Laøm xong khoâng aên naên,
Hoan hyû, loøng phôi phôùi,
Haùi quaû phuùc thöôøng haèng.

Madhuu-va ma~n~nati baalo yaava
paapa.m na paccati
Yadaa ca paccati paapa.m atha baalo
dukkha.m nigacchati. -- 69
|
As sweet as honey
is an evil deed,
so thinks the fool so long as it ripens
not;
but when it ripens, then he comes to grief.
-- 69 |
69. AÙc nghieäp chöa chín
muoài,
Keû ngu töôûng ñöôøng maät,
AÙc nghieäp khi chín thaät,
Keû ngu gaùnh khoå ñau.

Maase maase kusaggena baalo bhu~njetha
bhojana.m
Na so sa'nkhatadhammaana.m kala.m agghati
so.lasi.m. -- 70
|
Month after month
a fool may eat only as much food
as can be picked up on the tip of a kusa
grass blade;
but he is not worth a sixteenth part of
them
who have comprehended the Truth. -- 70 |
70. Keû ngu soáng haèng
thaùng,
Nhôø ngoïn coû coâ -xa,
Chöa baèng phaàn möôøi saùu,
Ngöôøi hieåu chaùnh phaùp maø!

|
Verily, an evil
deed committed does not immediately bear fruit,
just as milk curdles not at once;
smouldering, it follows the fool
like fire covered with ashes. -- 71 |
71. AÙc nghieäp chöa keát
traùi,
Nhö söõa chöa ñoâng ngay,
Nung ñoát keû ngu naøy,
Töïa löûa phuû tro vaäy.

Yaavadeva anatthaaya ~natta.m baalassa
jaayati
Hanti baalassa sukka.msa.m muddhamassa
vipaataya.m. -- 72
|
To his ruin, indeed,
the fool gains knowledge and fame;
they destroy his bright lot and cleave
his head. -- 72 |
72. Kieán thöùc vaø danh
voïng,
Trôû laïi haïi keû ngu,
Tieâu dieät ngay vaän toát,
Böûa noát caû ñaàu ngu.

Aavaasesu ca issariya.m puujaa parakulesu

|
The fool will desire
undue reputation,
precedence among monks,
authority in the monasteries,
honour among other families. -- 73 |
73. Keû ngu ham danh haõo,
Khoaùi ngoài tröôùc sa moân,
Öa quyeàn trong tu vieän,
Thích moïi ngöôøi suy toân.

|
Let both laymen
and monks think,
"by myself was this done;
in every work, great or small, let them
refer to me".
Such is the ambition of the fool;
his desires and pride increase. -- 74 |
74. Haõy ñeå caû taêng
tuïc,
Cho raèng: "Vieäc ta laøm,
Maëc duø lôùn hay nhoû,
Ñeàu phaûi theo yù ta."
Keû ngu oâm khaùt voïng,
Duïc, maïn lôùn daàn ra.

A~n~naa hi laabhuupanisaa a~n~naa
nibbaanagaaminii
Evameta.m abhi~n~naaya bhikkhu buddhassa
saavako
Sakkaara.m naabhinandeyya vivekamanubruuhaye.

|
Surely the path
that leads to worldly gain is one,
and the path that leads to Nibbaana
is another;
understanding this,
the bhikkhu, the disciple of the Buddha,
should not rejoice in worldly favours,
but cultivate detachment. -- 75 |
75. Ñöôøng naøy ñeán
theá gian.
Ñöôøng kia ñeán Nieát baøn.
Tyø kheo, ñeä töû Phaät,
Phaûi yù thöùc roõ raøng.
Ñöøng ñaém say theá lôïi.
Haõy tu haïnh ly tham.
