Attaana.m ce piya.m ja~n~naa rakkheyya na.m surakkhita.m
Ti.n.nama~n~natara.m yaama.m pa.tijaggeyya pa.n.dito. -- 157
If one holds dear, one should protect oneself well.
During every one of the three watches
the wise man should keep vigil. -- 157
157. Neáu ta yeâu quí ta,
Phaûi baûo veä toái ña,
Moät trong ba canh aáy,
Ngöôøi trí phaûi tænh ra.
Attaanameva pa.thama.m patiruupe nivesaye
Atha~n~namanusaaseyya na kilisseyya pa.n.dito. -- 158
Let one first establish oneself in what is proper,
and then instruct others.
Such a wise man will not be defiled. -- 158
158. Ngöôøi trí tröôùc ñaët mình,
Vaøo neáp soáng chaùnh haïnh,
Sau ra giaùo hoùa ngöôøi,
AÉt khoûi bò khieån traùch.

Sudanto vata dammetha attaa hi kira duddamo. -- 159
As he instructs others so should he himself act.
Himself fully controlled, he should control (others);
for oneself, indeed, is difficult to control. -- 159
159. Haõy laøm cho kyø ñöôïc,
Nhöõng ñieàu mình daïy ngöôøi,
Kheùo nhieáp mình, nhieáp ngöôøi,
Khoù thay töï ñieàu nhieáp!
Attaa hi attano naatho ko hi naatho paro siyaa
Attanaa-va sudantena naatha.m labhati dullabha.m. -- 160
Oneself, indeed, is one's saviour,
for what other saviour would there be?
With oneself well controlled,
one obtains a saviour difficult to find. -- 160
160. Haõy nöông töïa chính mình,
Chöù nöông töïa ai khaùc?
Ngöôøi kheùo ñieàu phuïc mình,
Ñaït choã töïa khoù ñaït.

Abhimanthati dummedha.m vajira.m-v-asmamaya.m ma.ni.m. -- 161
By oneself alone is evil done;
it is self-born, it is self-caused.
Evil grinds the unwise
as a diamond grinds a hard gem. -- 161
161. AÙc nghieäp do mình gaây,
AÙc nghieäp do mình taïo,
AÙc nghieäp nghieàn keû ngu,
Nhö kim cöông maøi ngoïc.
Yassa accantadussiilya.m maaluvaa saalamivotata.m
Karoti so tathattaana.m yathaa na.m icchatii diso. -- 162
He who is exceedingly corrupt,
like a maaluvaa creeper strangling a sal tree,
does to himself 
what even an enemy would wish for him. -- 162
162. Keû vung tay phaù giôùi,
Nhö caây bò giaây leo,
Töï chuoác laáy hieåm ngheøo,
Keû thuø muoán nhö vaäy.
Sukaraani asaadhuuni attano ahitaani ca
Ya.m ve hita~nca saadhu.m ca ta.m ve paramadukkara.m. -- 163
Easy to do are things that are hard
and not beneficial to oneself,
but very, very, difficult, indeed,
to do is that which is beneficial and good. -- 163
163. Vieäc aùc raát deã laøm,
Nhöng chaúng lôïi cho ta,
Vieäc aân ích töø thieän,
Thaät khoù laøm laém ña!
Yo saasana.m arahata.m ariyaana.m dhammajiivina.m
Pa.tikkosati dummedho di.t.thi.m nissaaya paapika.m
Phalaani ka.t.thakass-eva attagha~n~naaya phallati. -- 164
The stupid man, who, on account of false views,
scorns the teaching of the Arahants,
the Noble Ones, and the Righteous,
ripens like the fruit of the kaashta reed,
only for his own destruction. -- 164
164. Keû ngu oâm taø kieán,
Khinh mieät phaùp Thaùnh taêng,
Baäc La haùn, chaùnh haïnh,
Seõ töï dieät caên laønh,
Nhö traùi caây lau chín,
Töï huûy hoaïi thaân nhanh

Attanaa akata.m paapa.m attanaa-va visujjhati
Suddhi asuddhi paccatta.m naa~n~nama~n~no visodhaye. -- 165
By oneself, indeed, is evil done;
by oneself is one defiled.
By oneself is evil left undone;
by oneself indeed, is one purified.
Purity and impurity depend on oneself.
No one purifies another. -- 165
165. Töï ta gaây aùc nghieäp.
Töï ta nhieãm caáu traàn,
Töï ta traùnh aùc nghieäp,
Töï ta tònh thaân taâm.
Nhieãm tònh do ta caû.
Khoâng ai thanh tònh ai.
Attadattha.m paratthena bahunaa-pi na haapaye
Attadatthamabhi~n~naaya sadatthapasuto siyaa. -- 166
For the sake of others' welfare, however, great,
let not one neglect one's own welfare.
Clearly perceiving one's own welfare,
let one be intent on one's own goal. -- 166
166. Duø lôïi ngöôøi bao nhieâu,
Cuõng ñöøng queân töï lôïi,
Hieåu roõ ñöôïc töï lôïi,
Quyeát chí ñaït lôïi rieâng.

Purify (v) : Thanh loïc, taåy ueá.

Welfare (n) : Haïnh phuùc, phuùc lôïi.
Neglect (v) : Thôø ô, boû maëc.
Perceive (v) : Hieåu, nhaän thöùc.
Zealous (a) : Haêng haùi, nhieät taâm.
Regard (v) : Quan taâm, löu yù ñeán.
Self-interest (a) : Lôïi ích, caù nhaân, töï lôïi.
