Aha.m naago-va sa'ngaame caapaato patita.m sara.m
Ativaakya.m titikkhissa.m dussiilo hi bahujjano. -- 320
As an elephant in the battlefield
withstands the arrows shot from a bow,
even so will I endure abuse;
verily most people are undisciplined. -- 320
320. Nhö voi giöõa chieán ñòa,
Khaùng cöï moïi cung teân,
Ta chòu ñöïng huûy baùng,
Phaù giôùiaù bieát bao ngöôøi.
Danta.m nayanti samiti.m danta.m raajaa-bhiruuhati
Danto se.t.tho manussesu yo-tivaakya.m titikkhati. -- 321
They lead the trained (horses or elephants) to an assembly.
The king mounts the trained animal.
Best among men are the trained who endure abuse. -- 321
321. Keû luyeän voi döï hoäi,
Ngöôøi luyeän ngöïa daâng vua,
Baäc toâi luyeän thöôïng thöøa,
Chòu ñöïng moïi huûy baùng.
Varamassataraa dantaa aajaaniiyaa ca sindhavaa
Ku~njaraa ca mahaanaagaa attadanto tato vara.m. -- 322
Excellent are trained mules,
so are thoroughbred horses of Sindh
and noble tusked elephants;
but far better is he who has trained himself. -- 322
322. Quí thay löøa thuaàn thuïc,
Quí thay gioáng ngöïa Sindh.
Quí thay voi ngaø baùu,
Tuyeät thay baäc luyeän mình.
Na hi etehi yaanehi gaccheyya agata.m disa.m
Yathaattanaa sudantena danto dantena gacchati. -- 323
Surely never by those vehicles
would one go to the untrodden land (Nibbaana),
as does one who is controlled
through his subdued and well-trained self. -- 323
323. Chaúng phaûi nhôø voi ngöïa,
Ñöa ta ñeán Nieát baøn,
Chính baäc töï ñieàu phuïc,
Ñaït ñeán bôø theânh thang.
Dhanapaalako naama ku~njaro ka.tukappabhedano dunnivaarayo
Baddho kabala.m na bhu~njati sumarati naagavanassa ku~njaro. -- 324
The uncontrollable, captive tusker named Dhanapaalaka,
with pungent juice flowing, eats no morsel;
the tusker calls to mind the elephant forest. -- 324
324. Voi kia teân Taøi hoä,
Phaùt duïc tieát muøi haêng,
Baát trò bò giam giöõ,
Boû aên, nhôù röøng xanh.
Middhii yadaa hoti mahagghaso ca niddaayitaa samparivattasaayii
Mahaavaraaho-va nivaapapu.t.tho punappuna.m gabbhamupeti mando. -- 325
The stupid one, when he is torpid,
gluttonous, sleepy,
rolls about lying
like a great hog nourished on pig-wash,
goes to rebirth again and again. -- 325
325. Keû ngu si aùm ñoän,
Ham aên nguû nhö heo,
Baï ñaâu naèm laên ñoù,
Luaân hoài maõi cuoán theo.
Ida.m pure cittamacaari caarika.m
Yenicchaka.m yatthakaama.m yathaasukha.m
Tadajjaha.m niggahessaami yoniso
Hatthippabhinna.m viya a'nkusaggaho. -- 326
Formerly this mind went wandering
where it liked,
as it wished and as it listed.
Today with attentiveness
I shall completely hold it in check,
as a mahout (holds in check)
an elephant in must. -- 326
326. Xöa taâm naøy phoùng ñaõng,
Theo duïc laïc ñua ñoøi,
Nay chuyeân taâm nhieáp phuïc,
Nhö quaûn tröôïng ñieàu voi.
Appamaadarataa hotha sacittamanurakkhatha
Duggaa uddharathattaana.m pa'nke sanno-va ku~njaro. -- 327
Take delight in heedfulness.
Guard your mind well.
Draw yourselves out of the evil way
as did the elephant sunk in the mire. -- 327
327. Haõy tinh caàn, vui veû,
Kheùo giöõ taâm yù thaày,
Töï thoaùt khoûi aùc ñaïo,
Nhö voi vöôït sình laày.
Sace labhetha nipaka.m sahaaya.m
Saddhi.m cara.m saadhuvihaaridhiira.m
Abhibhuyya sabbaani parissayaani
Careyya ten-attamano satiimaa. -- 328
If you get a prudent companion
(who is fit) to live with you,
who behaves well and is wise,
you should live with him joyfully and mindfully,
overcoming all dangers. -- 328
328. Neáu gaëp baïn saùng suoát,
Caån troïng soáng hieàn löông,
Haøng phuïc moïi nguy bieán,
Hoan hyû keát baïn ñöôøng.
No ce labhetha nipaka.m sahaaya.m
Saddhi.m cara.m saadhuvihaaridhiira.m
Raajaa-va ra.t.tha.m vijita.m pahaaya
Eko care maata'ng-ara~n~ne-va naago. -- 329
If you do not get a prudent companion
who (is fit) to live with you,
who behaves well and is wise,
then like a king who leaves a conquered kingdom,
you should live alone
as an elephant does in the elephant forest. -- 329
329. Neáu khoâng gaëp baïn trí,
Caån troïng, soáng hieàn laønh,
Neân nhö vua töø boû,
Vöông quoác bò xaâm laêng,
Haõy soáng ñôøi ñôn ñoäc,
Nhö voi giöõa röøng xanh.
Ekassa carita.m seyyo
Natthi baale sahaayataa
Eko care na ca paapaani kayiraa
Appossukko maata'ng-ara~n~ne-va naago. -- 330
Better it is to live alone.
There is no fellowship with the ignorant.
Let one live alone doing no evil, care-free,
like an elephant in the elephant forest. -- 330
330. Thaø soáng caûnh coâ ñôn,
Hôn baïn beø keû ngoác,
Soáng leû loi ñôn ñoäc,
Khoâng gaây nghieäp aùc haønh,
Nhö voi giöõa röøng xanh,
Theânh thang voâ tö löï.
Atthamhi jaatamhi sukhaa sahaayaa
Tu.t.thi sukhaa yaa itariitarena
Pu~n~na.m sukha.m jiivitasa'nkhayamhi
Sabbassa dukkhassa sukha.m pahaa.na.m. -- 331
When need arises, pleasant (is it to have) friends.
Pleasant is it to be content with just this and that.
Pleasant is merit when life is at an end.
Pleasant is the shunning of all ill. -- 331
331. Vui thay ñöôïc baïn giuùp!
Vui thay soáng tri tuùc!
Vui thay cheát phöôùc duyeân!
Vui thay heát khoå nhuïc!
Sukhaa matteyyataa loke atho petteyyataa sukhaa
Sukhaa saama~n~nataa loke atho brahma~n~nataa sukhaa. -- 332
Pleasant in this world is ministering to mother.
Ministering to father too is pleasant in this world.
Pleasant is ministering to ascetics.
Pleasant too is ministering to the Noble Ones. -- 332
332. Vui thay haàu meï sanh!
Vui thay haàu cha laønh!
Vui thay haàu hieàn thaùnh!
Vui thay haàu sa moân!
Sukha.m yaava jaraa siila.m sukhaa saddhaa pati.t.thitaa
Sukho pa~n~naaya pa.tilaabho paapaana.m akara.na.m sukha.m. -- 333
Pleasant is virtue (continued) until old age.
Pleasant is steadfast confidence.
Pleasant is the attainment of wisdom.
Pleasant is it to do no evil. -- 333
333. Vui thay giaø ñöùc haïnh!
Vui thay taâm tín thaønh!
Vui thay aùc khoâng taïo!
Vui thay tueä vieân thaønh!
