Kodha.m jahe vippajaheyya maana.m
Sa~n~nojana.m sabbamatikkameyya
Ta.m naamaruupasmi.m asajjamaana.m
Aki~ncana.m naanupatanti dukkhaa. -- 221
One should give up anger.
One should abandon pride.
One should overcome all fetters.
Ills never befall him
who clings not to mind and body
and is passionless. -- 221
221. Dieät phaãn noä kieâu maïn,
Döùt phieàn naõo buoäc raøng,
Ñoaïn chaáp thuû, danh saéc.
Khoå naõo heát ñeo mang.
Yo ve uppatita.m kodha.m ratha.m bhanta.m-va dhaaraye
Tamaha.m saarathi.m bruumi rasmiggaaho itaro jano. -- 222
Whoso checks his uprisen anger
as though it were a rolling chariot,
him I call a true charioteer.
Other charioteers are mere rein-holders. -- 222
222. Ai daèn côn phaãn noä,
Nhö haõm xe ñang laên,
Vò aáy ñaùnh xe thaät,
Ngöôøi khaùc phuï cöông phanh.
Akkodhena jine kodha.m asaadhu.m saadhunaa jine
Jine kadariya.m daanena saccena alikavaadina.m. -- 223
Conquer anger by love.
Conquer evil by good.
Conquer the stingy by giving.
Conquer the liar by truth. -- 223
223. Töø bi thaéng saân haän.
Hieàn thieän thaéng hung taøn.
Boá thí thaéng xan tham.
Chaân thaät thaéng hö nguïy.
Sacca.m bha.ne na kujjheyya dajjaappasmimpi yaacito
Etehi tiihi .thaanehi gacche devaana santike. -- 224
One should utter the truth.
One should not be angry.
One should give even from a scanty store
to him who asks.
Along these three paths one may go
to the presence of the gods. -- 224
224. Haõy noùi lôøi chaân thaät.
Boá thí, chôù giaän hôøn.
Laøm ñöôïc ba ñieàu aáy,
Ñaït ñeán caûnh thieân chôn.
Ahi.msakaa ye munayo nicca.m kaayena sa.mvutaa
Te yanti accuta.m .thaana.m yattha gantvaa na socare. -- 225
Those sages who are harmless,
and are ever restrained in body,
go to the deathless state (Nibbaana),
whither gone they never grieve. -- 225
225. Hieàn só khoâng saùt haïi,
Ñieàu phuïc thaân maïng hoaøi,
Ñaït caûnh giôùi baát töû,
Giaûi thoaùt heát bi ai.
Sadaa jaagaramaanaana.m ahorattaanusikkhina.m
Nibbaa.na.m adhimuttaana.m attha.m gacchanti aasavaa. -- 226
The defilements of those who are ever vigilant,
who discipline themselves day and night,
who are wholly intent on Nibbaana,
are destroyed. -- 226
226. Ai ngaøy ñeâm tu taäp,
Chuyeân taâm höôùng Nieát baøn,
Thôøi thôøi thöôøng tænh giaùc,
Laäu hoaëc aét tieâu tan.
Poraa.nameta.m atula n-eta.m ajjatanaamiva
Nindanti tu.nhimaasiina.m nindanti bahubhaa.nina.m
Mitabhaa.nim-pi nindanti natthi loke anindito. -- 227
This, O Atula, is an old saying;
it is not one of today only:
they blame those who sit silent,
they blame those who speak too much.
Those speaking little too they blame.
There is no one who is not blamed in this world. -- 227
227. Vaäy ñoù A-tu-la,
Xöa nay ñeàu theá caû,
Ngoài im bò ñaû phaù,
Noùi nhieàu bò ngöôøi cheâ,
Noùi ít bò ngöôøi pheâ,
Khoâng ai khoâng bò traùch,
Treân traàn theá boän beà!
Na c-aahu na ca bhavissati na c-etarahi vijjati
Ekanta.m nindito poso ekanta.m vaa pasa.msito. -- 228
There never was, there never will be,
nor does there exist now,
a person who is wholly blamed or wholly praised. -- 228
228. Xöa, vò lai, vaø nay,
Ñaâu coù söï kieän naøy,
Keû hoaøn toaøn bò traùch,
Ngöôøi chæ ñöôïc khen hay!

Acchiddavutti.m medhaavi.m pa~n~naasiilasamaahita.m. -- 229
Examining day by day, the wise praise him
who is of flawless life, intelligent,
endowed with knowledge and virtue. -- 229
229. Ai ngaøy ngaøy phaûn tænh,
Soáng trong saïch ñöôøng ñöôøng,
Ñaày ñuû giôùi ñònh tueä,
Baäc trí thöôøng taùn döông.
Nekkha.m jambonadass-eva ko ta.m ninditumarahati
Devaa-pi na.m pasa.msanti brahmunaa-pi pasa.msito. -- 230
Who deigns to blame him
who is like a piece of refined gold?
Even the gods praise him;
by Brahma too he is praised. -- 230
230. Ngöôøi haïnh tôï vaøng y,
Ai daùm cheâ traùch gì,
Chö thieân coøn ca ngôïi,
Phaïm thieân cuõng kính qui.
Kaayappakopa.m rakkheyya kaayena sa.mvuto siyaa
Kaayaduccarita.m hitvaa kaayena sucarita.m care. -- 231
One should guard against misdeeds
(caused by) the body,
and one should be restrained in body.
Giving up evil conduct in body,
one should be of good bodily conduct. -- 231
231. Giöõ thaân ñöøng noùng giaän,
Ñieàu phuïc thaân an hoøa,
Töø boû thaân laøm aùc,
Thaân chaùnh tröïc hieàn hoøa.
Vaciipakopa.m rakkheyya vaacaaya sa.mvuto siyaa
Vaciiduccarita.m hitvaa vaacaaya sucarita.m care. -- 232
One should guard against misdeeds
(caused by) speech,
and one should be restrained in speech.
Giving up evil conduct in speech,
one should be of good conduct in speech. -- 232
232. Giöõ lôøi ñöùng noùng giaän,
Ñieàu phuïc lôøi nhu hoøa,
Töø boû lôøi thoâ aùc,
Lôøi töø toán oân hoøa.
Manopakopa.m rakkheyya manasaa sa.mvuto siyaa
Manoduccarita.m hitvaa manasaa sucarita.m care. -- 233
One should guard against misdeeds
(caused by) the mind,
and one should be restrained in mind.
Giving up evil conduct in mind,
one should be of good conduct in mind. -- 233
233. Giöõ yù ñöøng noùng giaän,
Ñieàu phuïc yù khieâm hoøa,
Töø boû yù ñoäc aùc,
Y Ù quaûng ñaïi bao la!
Kaayena sa.mvutaa dhiiraa atho vaacaaya sa.mvutaa
Manasaa sa.mvutaa dhiiraa te ve suparisa.mvutaa. -- 234
The wise are restrained in deed;
in speech, too, they are restrained.
The wise, restrained in mind,
are indeed those who are perfectly restrained. -- 234
234. Ñieàu phuïc ñöôïc thaân nghieäp,
Cheá ngöï ñöôïc ngoân töø,
Thuùc lieãm ñöôïc taâm tö,
Baäc trí kheùo töï cheâ.
