The best of paths is the Eightfold Path.
The best of truths are the four Sayings.
Non-attachment is the best of states.
The best of bipeds is the Seeing One. -- 273
273. Taùm chaùnh, ñöôøng thuø thaéng,
Boán caâu, lyù tuyeät luaân.
Ly tham, phaùp toái thöôïng.
Phaùp nhaõn, ñaáng sieâu quaàn.
Eso-va maggo natth-a~n~no dassanassa visuddhiyaa
Eta.m hi tumhe pa.tipajjatha maarass-eta.m pamohana.m. -- 274
This is the only Way.
There is none other for the purity of vision.
Do you follow this path.
This is the bewilderment of Maara. -- 274
274. Höôùng tri kieán thanh tònh,
Duy chæ coù ñöôøng naøy.
Neáu ngöôi theo ñöôøng naøy,
Ma vöông aét roái loaïn.

Akkhaato ve mayaa maggo a~n~naaya sallasatthana.m. -- 275
Entering upon that path,
you will make an end of pain.
Having learnt the removal of thorns,
have I taught you the path. -- 275
275. Ñi treân ñöôøng Taùm Chaùnh,
Laø traùnh moïi ñau thöông.
Ta daïy ngöôi con ñöôøng,
Nhoå saïch moïi gai goác.
Tumhehi kicca.m aatappa.m akkhaataaro tathaagataa
Pa.tipannaa pamokkhanti jhaayino maarabandhanaa. -- 276
Striving should be done by yourselves;
the Tathaagatas are only teachers.
The meditative ones, who enter the way,
are delivered from the bonds of Maara. -- 276
276. Haõy noã löïc tinh taán,
Nhö Lai baäc daãn ñöôøng.
Ai tu taäp thieàn ñònh,
AÉt thoaùt voøng Ma vöông.
Sabbe sa'nkhaaraa aniccaa-ti yadaa pa~n~naaya passati
Atha nibbindati dukkhe esa maggo visuddhiyaa. -- 277
Transient are all conditioned things:
when this, with wisdom, one discerns,
then is one disgusted with ill;
this is the path to purity. -- 277
277. Nhôø trí tueä quaùn chieáu,
Thaáy caùc haønh voâ thöôøng;
Theá laø chaùn ñau thöông,
Ñaây chính ñöôøng thanh tònh.
Sabbe sa'nkhaaraa dukkhaa-ti yadaa pa~n~naaya passati
Atha nibbindati dukkhe esa maggo visuddhiyaa. -- 278
"Sorrowful are all conditioned things":
when this, with wisdom, one discerns,
then is one disgusted with ill;
this is the path to purity. -- 278
278. Nhôø trí tueä quaùn chieáu,
Thaáy caùc haønh khoå ñau;
Theá laø chaùn khoå ñau,
Ñaây chính ñöôøng thanh tònh.
Sabbe dhammaa anattaa-ti yadaa pa~n~naaya passati
Atha nibbindati dukkhe esa maggo visuddhiyaa. -- 279
"All Dhammas are without a soul":
when this, with wisdom, one discerns,
then is one disgusted with ill;
this is the path to purity. -- 279
279. Nhôø trí tueä quaùn chieáu,
Thaáy phaùp voâ ngaõ roài;
Theá laø chaùn khoå thoâi,
Ñaây chính ñöôøng thanh tònh.

The inactive idler who strives not
when he should strive,
who, though young and strong, is slothful,
with (good) thoughts depressed,
does not by wisdom realize the Path. -- 280
280. Khi caàn khoâng noã löïc,
Tuy treû khoûe nhöng löôøi,
Chí cuøn, trí thuï ñoäng,
Ngoä ñaïo sao ñöôïc ngöôi!
Vaacaanurakkhii manasaa susa.mvuto
Kaayena ca akusala.m na kayiraa
Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye
Aaraadhaye magga.m isippavedita.m. -- 281
Watchful of speech, well restrained in mind,
let him do nought unskilful through his body.
Let him purify these three ways of action
and win the path realized by the sages. -- 281
281. Thaân khoâng ñöôïc laøm aùc,
Kheùo giöõ yù giöõ lôøi,
Thöôøng thanh tònh ba nghieäp,
Ñaït ñaïo thaùnh nhaân thoâi.
Yogaa ve jaayati bhuuri ayogaa bhuurisa'nkhayo
Eta.m dvedhaa patha.m ~natvaa bhavaaya vibhavaaya ca
Tathattaana.m niveseyya yathaa bhuuri pava.d.dhati. -- 282
Verily, from meditation arises wisdom.
Without meditation wisdom wanes.
Knowing this twofold path of gain and loss,
let one so conduct oneself
that wisdom may increase. -- 282
282. Tu thieàn trí tueä sanh.
Boû thieàn trí tueä dieät.
Ñöôïc maát kheùo phaân bieät,
Bieát roõ ñöôøng chaùnh taø,
Töï noã löïc theo ñaø,
Trí tueä daàn taêng tröôûng.
Vana.m chindatha maa rukkha.m vanato jaayatii bhaya.m
Chetvaa vana~nca vanatha~nca nibbanaa hotha bhikkhavo. -- 283
Cut down the forest (of the passions), but not real trees.
From the forest (of the passions) springs fear.
Cutting down both forest and brushwood
(of the passions),
be forestless, O bhikkhus. -- 283
283. Ñoán röøng chôù ñoán caây,
Vì röøng gaây sôï haõi.
Neân ñoán röøng tham aùi,
Tyø kheo, haõy ly tham.
Yaava.m vanatho na chijjati anumatto-pi narassa naarisu
Pa.tibaddhamano-va taava so vaccho khiirapako-va maatari. -- 284
For as long as the slightest brushwood (of the passions)
of man towards women is not cut down,
so long is his mind in bondage,
like the milch calf to its mother-cow. -- 284
284. Bao laâu chöa ñoaïn tuyeät,
AÙi duïc giöõa gaùi trai,
Taâm tö ñeo ñuoåi hoaøi,
Nhö beâ con theo meï.
Ucchinda sinehamattano kumuda.m saaradika.m-va paa.ninaa
Santimaggameva bruuhaya nibbaa.na.m sugatena desita.m. -- 285
Cut off your affection,
as though it were an autumn lily, with the hand.
Cultivate the very path of peace.
Nibbaana has been expounded
by the Auspicious One. -- 285
285. Haõy caét tieät aùi duïc,
Nhö tay ngaét sen thu.
Ñaïo tòch tònh gaéng tu,
Baäc Thieän Theä daïy vaäy.
Idha vassa.m vasissaami idha hemantagimhisu
Iti baalo vicinteti antaraaya.m na bujjhati. -- 286
Here will I live in the rainy season,
here in the autumn and in the summer:
thus muses the fool.
He realizes not the danger (of death). -- 286
286. Muøa möa ta ôû ñaây,
Heø thu ta ôû ñaây.
Keû ngu si nghó vaäy,
Naøo ñaâu thaáy hieåm nguy.
Ta.m puttapasusammatta.m byaasattamanasa.m nara.m
Sutta.m gaama.m mahogho-va maccu aadaaya gacchati. -- 287
The doting man with mind set on children and herds,
death seizes and carries away,
as a great flood (sweeps away)
a slumbering village. -- 287
287. Ngöôøi ham nhieàu con caùi,
Thích suùc vaät dö thöøa,
Töû thaàn seõ keùo böøa,
Nhö luït cuoán laøng nguû.
Na santi puttaa taa.naaya na pitaa n-api bandhavaa
Antakenaadhipannassa natthi ~naatisu taa.nataa. -- 288
There are no sons for one's protection,
neither father nor even kinsmen;
for one who is overcome by death
no protection is to be found among kinsmen. -- 288
288. Con caùi naøo chôû che,
Meï cha naøo o beá,
Thaân thích naøo baûo veä,
Khi bò thaàn cheát loâi.
Etamatthavasa.m ~natvaa pa.n.dito siilasa.mvuto
Nibbaa.nagamana.m magga.m khippameva visodhaye -- 289
Realizing this fact,
let the virtuous and wise person
swiftly clear the way
that leads to Nibbaana. -- 289
289. Hieåu roõ söï lyù treân,
Baäc trí neân trì giôùi,
Khai saùng ñöôøng ñi tôùi,
Tröïc chæ ñeán Nieát baøn.
