better is one single word of the Dhamma,

Yo sahassa.m
sahassena sa'ngaame maanuse jine
Eka~nca jeyya attaana.m sa ve sa'ngaamaj-uttamo.

Though one should
conquer a men in battlefield,
yet he, indeed, is the noblest victor
who has conquered himself. -- 103 |
103. Daàu taïi baõi chieán
tröôøng,
Thaéng ngaøn ngaøn quaân ñòch,
Khoâng baèng töï thaéng mình,
Chieán coâng aáy -kyø tích!

Self-conquest is,
indeed, far greater
than the conquest of all other folk. --

104. Töï thaéng mình veû
vang,
Hôn chinh phuïc keû khaùc,
Ngöôøi ñieàu phuïc ñöôïc mình,
Thöôøng töï cheá an laïc.

Neva devo
na gandhabbo na maaro saha brahmunaa
Jita.m apajita.m kayiraa tathaaruupassa
jantuno. -- 105
|
Neither a god nor
a Ghandabba,
nor Maara together with Brahmaa,
can win back the victory of such a person
who is self-subdued
and ever lives in restraint. -- 105 |
105. Thieân thaàn, caøn
thaùc baø,
Ma vöông, hay Phaïm thieân,
Khoâng theå chinh phuïc noåi,
Ngöôøi ñieàu phuïc töï nhieân.

Maase maase
sahassena yo yajetha sata.m sama.m

Saa yeva puujanaa seyyo ya~nce vassasata.m

Though month after
month with a thousand,
one should make an offering for a hundred
years,
yet, if, only for a moment,
one should honour (a Saint) who has perfected
himself
- that honour is, indeed,
better than a century of sacrifice. --

106. Thaùng thaùng cuùng
ngaøn vaøng,
Teá töï caû traêm naêm,
Khoâng baèng trong giaây laùt,
Kính leã baäc thaùnh taêng,
Kính leã vaäy hôn raèng,
Teá töï haøng theá kyû.

jantu aggi.m paricare vane
Eka~nca bhaavitattaana.m muhuttamapi
puujaye
Saa yeva puujanaa seyyo ya~nce vassasata.m
huta.m. -- 107
|
Though, for a century
a man should tend the (sacred) fire in
the forest,
yet, if, only for a moment,
he should honour (a Saint) who has perfected
himself
- that honour is, indeed, better than
a century of fire-sacrifice. -- 107 |
107. Daàu traêm naêm thaønh
kính,
Thôø löûa taïi röøng xanh,
Khoâng baèng trong giaây laùt,
Kính leã baäc thaùnh taêng,
Kính leã vaäy hôn raèng,
Baùi löûa haèng theá kyû.

Ya.m ki~nci
yi.t.tha.m va huta.m va loke
Sa.mvacchara.m yajetha pu~n~napekkho
Sabbam-pi ta.m na catubhaagameti
Abhivaadanaa ujjugatesu seyyo. -- 108
|
In this world whatever
gift or alms a person seeking merit
should offer for a year,
all that is not worth a single quarter
of the reverence towards the Upright which
is excellent. -- 108 |

caû naêm,
Cuùng döôøng hoaëc boá thí,
Khoâng baèng moät phaàn tö,
Kính leã baäc chaùnh trí.

Abhivaadanasiilissa
nicca.m vaddhaapacaayino
Cattaaro dhammaa va.d.dhanti aayu va.n.no
sukha.m bala.m. -- 109
|
For one who is
in the habit of constantly honouring
and respecting the elders,
four blessings increase
- age, beauty, bliss, and strength. --

kính leã,
Baäc tröôûng laõo cao minh,
Boán phöôùc laønh taêng tröôûng,
Thoï-vui-khoûe-ñeïp xinh.

Though one should
live a hundred years,
immoral and uncontrolled,
yet better, indeed, is a single day's
life
of one who is moral and meditative. --

Trì giôùi, tu thieàn ñònh.
